Why Hire a Home Organizer?

“Why would anyone need someone to come organize their house?” The first time someone asked me this question, I was stumped. It came from a place of genuine curiosity, though it caught me off guard. *Cue my thinking face*

Bedroom closet with shelving, hooks, and storage

To me, it was obvious—so much so that I didn’t know how to explain it. Then I realized that not many people see what I get to see in people’s homes. My experience as a nanny, household manager, caregiver, and home organizer has put me directly in their most personal and cherished spaces. This gives me a unique kind of insight.

I see the actual condition of their residence–there’s no hiding things away behind closed doors or frantic last-minute cleaning to give off the impression of being tidy.

I see how things really are and how they truly exist within the walls.

I hear personal stories about the life circumstances that caused or influenced their home situation.

I touch the very items that make people feel strong emotions or none at all.

I observe a range of emotions related to their homes: overwhelm, excitement, anxiety, frustration, shame, hope, acceptance, and more.

Every “why” is connected to a problem or a vision.

Someone might face a challenge with their home or have a vision for how they want it to look, feel, or function. There is no “why” too small or too big. Every “why” is personal and worth considering.

Aesthetic Motivation

The reasons people hire a home organizer mainly fall into two categories: aesthetic and functional. What we most often see on TV and social media falls under the first category—people who want visually appealing spaces. This includes color-coordinated belongings, matching storage containers, and staged decor, all designed to create a beautiful look.

Functional Motivation

Others want to change or improve the function of their homes and fall into the second category. We see their issues manifest as clutter and excess. Clutter can take hold due to:

○ Busyness

○ Overconsumption

○ Physical or mental conditions

○ Unresolved trauma | emotional barriers

○ A lack of organizing knowledge and skills

○ An inheritance of belongings from loved ones

○ And more

If they’re open to it, clients will try to identify the underlying influences of their clutter. This new understanding can help them change their behaviors and habits, which can improve how their home functions.

Mixing different types of items can make it harder to find and store things, leading to clutter.
