When to Hire a Home Organizer
While people often seek my help from a place of overwhelm, this is not the default state someone needs to be in to hire a professional home organizer. There is no minimum requirement, and you don't need to meet any specific criteria to “qualify” for one.
Here are a few lifestyle and home symptoms that might suggest you could benefit from working with someone.
Your daily tasks are not effective
When a house lacks systems that simplify daily living, time can be wasted. This can look like having cupboards that are too full, making it difficult to access the dishes you need to prepare meals. Or not knowing where certain things are and spending a lot of time searching for them. Or not having enough space to fold laundry, so it stays in a wrinkled mess, making it hard for you to put together a work outfit quickly in the morning.
It may seem like a few minutes here and there, but those minutes add up and can be better spent in more meaningful ways. A home organizer can help you reclaim your time by setting up systems that actually work for your current lifestyle.
You have a mental health or physical condition
Living with a mental and physical health condition brings on its own unique challenges. Some of those limitations can make decluttering and organizing your home difficult, unsafe, or impossible.
People with brain-based conditions, for example, can benefit from having an organizer who guides them through the decision-making process. People with health or physical conditions receive support with physical tasks they might not be able to do alone. Pregnant women, older seniors, those living with chronic illnesses like cancer, and injured individuals are among a long list of clients who get help to make their homes feel supportive, peaceful, and restorative.
Having an extra set of hands takes pressure off you to do everything yourself, especially during a time when that is uncomfortable or not possible.
Your home or a specific space causes you to feel negative emotions
Have you avoided looking at or even entering certain parts of your home because they cause you a lot of stress? It's common not to spend any time in them if there are feelings of overwhelm, guilt, hopelessness, and negativity.
A home organizer provides emotional and physical support as you work through the contents of these spaces. They serve as an anchor during the process, helping you stay focused on transforming the spaces into the ones you actually want.
You are or will be experiencing a life transition
Periods of transition are often the catalyst- or the main motivator- for someone hiring a home organizer. They can often be seen as overwhelming times in a person’s life or as a reason for a new start, such as:
○ Downsizing from a decades-old family home into assisted living
○ Transforming a guest room into a nursery
○ Clearing out an estate after the loss of a loved one
○ Defining ownership of personal property during a divorce
○ Rearranging an apartment to prepare for a partner's move-in
A home organizer can provide support during these high-stress and emotional times. They can assist you in changing your physical environment to support your transition needs.
You do not have the time or energy to organize your home
In our modern society, where responsibilities demand a lot of your time and energy, your ability to manage certain projects at home can be limited. Still, your home is likely the command center of your life and must operate properly so everything can run smoothly.
Outsourcing decluttering and organizing tasks can make the process more efficient. Some home organizers, like myself, offer a do-it-with-you service, allowing you to be more of an active participant instead of doing it all on your own. Others provide a complete do-it-for-you service, so you don't need to be as involved.
Similar to other aspects of your health, it's important to notice any signs indicating it may be time to seek support. Prevention is more effective than responding to problems that have built up over time.
You don’t need to wait until you’re at your wits’ end and ready to toss all your belongings in the trash to seek help.
